Can’t wait to MOVE!!!  I am soooo ready to go north!

My sister had a serious car accident a couple of weeks ago.  She was in ICU for 2 days and then a hospital room for 3 days.  She is finally home now with healing broken ribs and bruises.  She was extremely lucky to have even survived.

Have you heard of doing “castor oil packs”?  I helped my sister do one and she claimed that she felt invigorated afterwards.  So I tried doing one on myself…no noticed change.  haha…

The gardens are growing lush.  The tomato garden is over crowded however…we will be making the cages tonight once Richie gets home.  He brought home some left over cement wire that we will form into cylinders.  Everyday I get a handful of snow peas!!  The lettuce is prime and radishes too.  I am disappointed in the spinach because it is just going to seed without any large leaves!  The leaves are small and few and then it gets a tall seed top.  The seeds were left over from last year so that could be part of the reason.  Now it is getting too hot to re plant spinach.  I will try and find some okra.  That is a great southern plant.  And yes we will be moving this summer…but I had to have some sort of garden.  And maybe it will be a small selling point.

Yesterday I made laundry detergent.  This was the recipe I used:

1 bar of pure soap (I used my first batch of homemade lye soap because it is very hard and strong)

1/4 c. borax

1/4 c. washing soda

I grated the bar of soap and mixed it with the powders and about 1 gal. of water in a big pan.  And cooked it over low heat until the soaps all melted.  Let it cool and pour into my previously used laundry container (which was a liquid).  Then filled the remainder of the container with water and stirred (it made about 2 gallons). The liquid turns into a gel and you have to stir it often.  I used it yesterday (couldn’t wait) to wash a load of colors.  I used 1/4 c. and thought that I may have needed just a little more.  We have a high efficiency washer and you are supposed to use low sudsing detergent.  So this worked great becasue it is low sudsing. So today I did a load of whites and used 1/2 c. and they turned out great.  That is the majic amount for my machine with this saop.

So yeah….I made some homemade soap also…a couple of weeks ago!!!  It was so fun and really easy that I am wondering why I waited so long!  Well, I was scared of using the lye and had a hard time finding it. Due to “meth labs” using lye in their production, alot of stores quit carring it.  Eventurally I did find it at a hardware store in the plumbing department.  So the first batch I made was pure and simple.  Using only Lard, water and lye.  (NON-VEGAN)  The second batch was made using…lard, water, lye, cocoa butter, shea butter, olive oil and dried sage from my garden.  There is a lye calculator online that you can use to help you make up your own recipes!!!  It was oooohhhh so cool!

The little pioneer women!!  Yes, that’s me…

I go get my little grandson Monday and bring him home with me…for about 3 weeks!!  What am I getting myself into?  The only thing I am worried about is him getting bored and not having kids his age to play with.  I think I will look up at the park district and see if they hav any programs he can do while he is here…yeah..that is it!

Ok I have to go….Thanks to my regular friends here that have left messages of cheer!!!
